About the event

A concert of new works for ensemble and electronics in conversation with the exhibition Vectors of Time and Space with works of Stephen Antonakos.

The concert reveals the metaphysical dimension of music, in the same way that the works of Stephen Antonakos, with their prominent geometric shapes, radiate a metaphysical atmosphere. Music activates unknown forces of human perception beyond conscious control; instinctive reactions, often inexplicable to the listener.

Mater Tremenda” by Ioannis Angelakis, contains traces of a faded religious tradition, re-contextualising its core through a sound emerging as a haptic substance that is physically experienced. Fragments from Handel’s Salve Regina appear distorted and transformed, like fading memories of a ritual that survives only through resonance and transformation.

In “The Hand Angels” by Tianyu Zou, the relationships between movement, sound, and space become perceptible through the presence of the hand as an interface; an organ of touch, labor, expression, and resistance. The work foregrounds vulnerability, incompleteness, and unpredictable failure, revealing performance as a fragile network of interactions between body, instrument, and technology.

Inspired by the poetry of Samson Rakas, Iason Maroulis’ “Thaleron Chimera” (Chimera of the Blossomed Ones) brings to the foreground a paradoxical anthropocentric metaphysics. The boundaries between acoustic and electronic sound are blurred and the narrative moves between immersion and the reminder of the work’s artificial nature, allowing the music to retain its magical dimension while simultaneously exposing the human origins of creation.

Together, these works explore sound not only as music, but also as memory, gesture and physical presence; revealing the invisible forces that connect, imagination, body and perception.
